Emirates is the flag carrier of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and was Chelsea's shirt sponsor from 2001 until 2005, with shirts carrying Fly Emirates branding. It was the second Gulf-based airline to sponsor Chelsea, following Gulf Air.
Chelsea chairman Ken Bates signed a four-year deal worth £24m with the airline in January 2001, with Emirates replacing Autoglass from the start of the 2001-02 season. At the time it was the second biggest sponsorship deal in English football.[1] Upon the expiry of the four-year deal in 2005, Emirates became the main sponsor of Arsenal. In addition to featuring on the club's shirts, the airline secured naming rights for the North London side's new stadium for fifteen years, which has been known as the Emirates Stadium since it opened in 2006.
