Pre-Chelsea career
Dean joined Chelsea as a teenager after his family moved from his native South Africa at a young age.
Chelsea career
The young midfielder earned a scholarship at Chelsea beginning in 2004, becoming a regular in the side during his second season, occasionally captaining the side. Despite being well considered, he rejected an offer of a professional deal and headed north to sign for Glasgow Rangers.
International
Dean was not capped internationally whilst at Chelsea, but in 2008 was called up by South Africa for the first time. He had to wait until 2012 to make his full debut under manager Gordon Igesund but made further appearances during the 2013 African Cup of Nations, which South Africa hosted.

Post Chelsea Career
Dean spent three years at Ibrox with Rangers, making one senior league appearance. During his stay, he spent a year on loan at Bradford City, where he scored four goals in 33 league appearances. Perhaps being buoyed by proving he could play in England's professional leagues, he signed for Oldham Athletic in 2009 and served as the club's captain until his departure in 2013, when he left for Doncaster Rovers, where he would be re-united with former Oldham boss Paul Dickov.
