Douglas 'Doug' Rougvie (born 24 May 1956 in Ballingry, Fife) is a former Scottish international defender who played for Chelsea between 1984 and 1987, having joined from Aberdeen. A tough and committed defender, he was known for his hard-tackling and aggressive style.

Before Chelsea
Having started out at junior side Dunfermline United, [1] Rougvie began his professional career with Aberdeen, and his nine year playing career at the club coincided with a highly successful period for the Dons. He made 279 appearances between 1975 and 1984, the latter six years under future Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who would lead Aberdeen to the Scottish league championship in 1979-80 and 1983-84, the Scottish Cup in 1982, 1983 and 1984, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1983 and the European Super Cup in 1983.
Chelsea career
Rougvie moved south to Chelsea prior to the 1984-85 season, the Blues having won promotion back to the top flight the previous term. Signed for a fee of £150,000 he joined fellow Scots Pat Nevin and David Speedie in a resurgent Chelsea side. He made his debut in the opening game of the season, playing at left back in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal in which Kerry Dixon scored a memorable equaliser.
Rougvie's aggressive style instantly endeared him to the fans, but quick opponents would expose his lack of pace, and he would occasionally make mistakes. One such error came in a League Cup quarter final replay against Sheffield Wednesday; Chelsea had fought back to lead 4-3 at Hillsborough after being 3-0 down, but Rougvie conceded a late penalty, forcing a second replay, which Chelsea won.
Injury cost him his place in the side for much of the remainder of the season, and though he regained his place at the start of the 1985-86 season, by November he had lost his place at left back to Keith Dublin. He did feature regularly over the course of the season, making 45 appearances, but he was utilised in various defensive positions. He played in Chelsea's Full Members Cup victory against Manchester City, but scored a late own goal as the Blues almost managed to throw away a four goal advantage in the last ten minutes.
Rougvie didn't appear in the 1986-87 season until late September, but appeared regularly until December, when he was sent off in a 4-0 home defeat against Wimbledon mid-way through the first half for headbutting John Fashanu, in what would be one of his last appearances for Chelsea. He started the next match, a 3-0 loss against Liverpool at Anfield, but would not play again until the penultimate game of the season; another loss to Wimbledon, which would prove to be his last appearance for the club.
After Chelsea
Surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea well covered in defence and recently bolstered at left back thanks to the signing of Tony Dorigo, Rougvie signed for Brighton & Hove Albion prior to the 1987-88 season for a fee of £73,000. His spell on the south coast would last only one season, and he later played for Fulham and Shrewsbury Town before returning to Scotland to play for Dunfermline. He was then appointed player-manager at Montrose in 1990, where he would remain for two seasons.
International
Rougvie won one cap for Scotland; against Northern Ireland in 1983 in the British Championship, a few months before joining Chelsea.
