Before Chelsea

Emerson began his career at Santos in Brazil, emerging through their youth system before moving to AS Roma in 2015. His performances in Serie A earned him a reputation as one of Italy’s most promising left-backs, despite a serious knee injury that sidelined him for much of the 2016–17 season.

Chelsea career

2017–18 Season

Emerson joined Chelsea in January 2018 under Antonio Conte. Initially seen as a backup to Marcos Alonso, he made his debut in an FA Cup match against Hull City and later featured in the Premier League. Though his appearances were limited, he impressed with his energy and crossing. He made a total of 7 appearances across all competitions and was part of the squad that won the FA Cup that season.

2018–19 Season

Under Maurizio Sarri, Emerson’s involvement increased, especially in the latter stages of the season. He played a significant role in Chelsea’s Europa League campaign, including starting the final against Arsenal. While Marcos Alonso remained the first choice in the league early on, Emerson was often preferred in big European and cup matches due to his pace and defensive reliability. He ended the season with over 27 appearances and one goal against Liverpool in the League Cup.

2019–20 Season

Frank Lampard gave Emerson a run of starts early in the season, and he looked poised to become first-choice left-back. However, injuries disrupted his rhythm, and he lost his place midway through the campaign. Despite limited appearances in the second half of the season, he remained part of the squad in both league and cup competitions.

2020–21 Season

Emerson’s game time was reduced under both Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. With Ben Chilwell now first choice, Emerson became a squad player, mostly appearing in domestic cups and off the bench. He still made several important contributions, including scoring in a Champions League match against Atlético Madrid and later in the FA Cup. He was part of the squad that won the UEFA Champions League, coming on in the second leg of the round of 16 and remaining on the bench for the final.

2021–22 Season

Palmieri started the season as a substitute, coming on for Marcos Alonso, in the first match of the league season against Crystal Palace. However, In search of regular playing time, Emerson joined Olympique Lyonnais on loan for the season. There, he was a consistent starter and featured in both Ligue 1 and Europa League matches. His performances in France showed his continued value as a dependable left-back at the top level.

In August 2022 he joined West Ham United on a four-year contract, ending his four-and-a-half spell at Stamford Bridge.
