Pre-Chelsea career
Jhon spent much of his formative footballing development in the youth system at Defensor Sporting in his native Uruguay.
Chelsea career
In 2008, Jhon featured in summer trial matches for Chelsea's Under-18 team and impressed enough to earn a four-year contract. However, FIFA's transfer rules prohibit Under-18s from moving between continents, so he remained at Defensor Sporting to develop.
He scored his first professional goal for them as an 18 year-old and featured for Chelsea in non-competitive tournaments in Amsterdam and in Dallas, but just as his progress into the senior game seemed to be materialising, he suffered a devastating knee injury in April 2011 which sidelined him for over a year.
His return to fitness in early 2012 saw him feature for Defensor Sporting in the South American Under-20 Copa Libertadores and for Uruguay at Under-20 level, and whilst a loan to Spanish Second Division team CD Sabadell (along with Ulises Dávila) fell through, he joined Third Division side CD Leganés for the 2012-13 season. Fitness issues hindered his progress once again but he did find enough to feature on occasion throughout the season and grabbed two goals for his team's cause.
Jhon returned there for the 2013-14 season and scored on the opening day of the campaign, whilst generally retaining a higher level of fitness than in previous years. He featured sporadically in a season that saw Leganés promoted back to the second tier after a ten-year absence.
He was released at the end of his contract in June 2014.

Jhon is a Uruguay youth international with representation from Under-15 level all the way up to Under-20 level.
