The Middlesex Charity Cup, also called the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup is an annual competition between clubs based in the region that traditionally comprised the county of Middlesex (now subsumed into Greater London). The trophy was first presented in 1901, when Clapton Orient were the winners. The tournament has traditionally been contested by non-league sides, but with all clubs from the region eligible to enter, Chelsea competed in the tournament for a short time in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Blues won the tournament in 1989, 1990 and 1992, with the line-ups featuring many senior players, including Dennis Wise, Erland Johnsen and Frank Sinclair. Chelsea's initial participation was partly to give players game time after a 4-0 FA Cup loss to Barnsley left Chelsea without a game for 2 weeks. Chelsea played a strong line-up against Feltham, and won the match 6-2 in front of 611 fans. [2]
Chairman Ken Bates was keen for Chelsea to compete in the competition, hoping that the final would be at Wembley Stadium, as it had been in 1988 between Hendon and Wembley. However the final took place in October 1989 at Stamford Bridge, a reserve side beating Kingsbury 4-0.
