Before Chelsea

Born in York, Pickering represented his hometown club, York City, during the Second World War, and later in the Football League. He saved 7 penalties during the 1947-48 season, and his performances attracted interest from Chelsea, who signed the young goalkeeper for £6,750 in 1948.

Chelsea career

Pickering made his debut against Liverpool in a 1-1 draw in October 1948. He went on to start the next eighteen games, but lost his place to Harry Medhurst in February, who re-established himself as first choice goalkeeper. The Yorkshireman made just one appearance during the 1949-50 season, but made 10 appearances during 1950-51 before leaving for Kettering Town in 1951. Pickering made 27 league appearances for the Blues, and 35 in total, keeping five clean sheets.[1]

After Chelsea

Pickering spent four seasons at Kettering before returning to the Football League with Northampton Town. Also an accomplished cricketer, Pickering made one appearance in the County Championship for Northamptonshire in 1953, as wicket keeper. He later emigrated to South Africa and became a first class umpire.[2]
