Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough, CBE (29 August 1923 – 24 August 2014), popularly known as Lord Attenborough, was a British actor, director, producer, entrepreneur and a Life Vice-President of Chelsea Football Club.

Attenborough has been attending games at Stamford Bridge since the Second World War, and in order to get in shape for his role in 'Brighton Rock' he trained with the Chelsea team, becoming a friend of England and Chelsea striker Tommy Lawton.[1]

Having grown up in Leicester, Attenborough bought his estate on Richmond Green in south-west London in 1949, 5 miles from Stamford Bridge, and lived there with his wife Sheila until his death in August 2014 [2]. Attenborough served as a director of the club from 1969-1982 and from 1993 held the honorary position of Life Vice-President.

A regular at Stamford Bridge for over 60 years, Attenborough made his passion for Chelsea clear in interviews:

"Interestingly, I made sure that my contract stated that the Saturday matinee could not begin before 5:30, which allowed me to drive up from Stamford Bridge

for the Chelsea games. I wore no make-up and didn't come on stage for the first 19 minutes. There was no reason for me not to pursue my real love – football."

- Lord Attenborough, on his "real love".[3]
