Pre-Chelsea career
Conor joined Chelsea as an eight-year old.
Chelsea career
Conor made his Under-18 debut against West Ham United in March 2016 before penning his scholarship three months later. In a competitive midfield group under new manager Jody Morris he proved to be a beacon of consistency, missing just two league matches all season long. His strong year was recognised with a Development Squad debut, the Academy Scholar of the Year award, and a goalscoring Man of the Match performance in the league-title clinching win over Reading.
After excelling in Development Squad football, he went on loan to Charlton at the start of 2019-20, excelling for a struggling team before swapping them for promotion-chasing Swansea in mid-season. To start 2020-21, he joined Premier League newcomers West Brom on loan. A season later, Gallagher joined Crystal Palace on loan where he featured regularly in the Premier League during these loans, developing a reputation for his energy, tenacity, passing range, and goal contributions. This stint prepared him for a breakthrough into Chelsea’s senior squad.
2022–23 Season
After returning from Crystal Palace, Gallagher was integrated into Chelsea’s first-team squad under Thomas Tuchel and later Graham Potter. Despite Chelsea undergoing a turbulent season marked by managerial changes and inconsistency, Gallagher emerged as a reliable rotation option in midfield. He made 35 Premier League appearances, including 18 starts, scoring 3 goals, including a memorable late winner against Crystal Palace. He also featured in the Champions League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup, bringing his season total to 45 appearances across all competitions. Gallagher’s high pressing, tackling, and box arrivals gave Chelsea much-needed energy, and he often operated in both a central role and as a more advanced No. 8.
2023–24 Season
Gallagher became a vital component of Mauricio Pochettino’s side and was appointed vice-captain of the club, frequently wearing the armband in the absence of Reece James. He played in all 38 Premier League matches, starting 37, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists, often leading Chelsea in distance covered and ball recoveries. In total, he made 50 appearances across all competitions. Gallagher played an instrumental role in Chelsea’s run to the Carabao Cup final, scoring in the semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough and playing the full 120 minutes in the final against Liverpool. He also played a key part in Chelsea’s push for European qualification, finishing the season as one of the squad’s most consistent and hard-working players.
Despite his strong performances in previous seasons, Gallagher was excluded from Chelsea's first-team plans under new head coach Enzo Maresca. On 21 August 2024, Gallagher completed a permanent move to Atlético Madrid for a reported fee of €42 million, signing a five-year contract.
International
Gallagher made his senior debut for England on 15 November 2021 against San Marino. He was part of England’s squad at UEFA Euro 2024, playing in key matches before England’s exit. Known for his strong tackling, pressing intensity, and passing range, Gallagher has become a trusted selection under England’s coaching staff.
