Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü is a professional sports club based in the district of Kadiköy, Istanbul, Turkey. The sports club derives its name from the Fenerbahçe neighbourhood of Kadiköy. The club was founded in secret in 1907 because Ottoman law at the time prohibited Turkish youth from forming football clubs or teams. In 1908, a new law was passed and football clubs were allowed. In 1909, Fenerbahçe finished fifth in their first season with the newly formed Turkish Football League. Many of the club's matches following the First World War were played against teams comprised of British soldiers and sailors, who were stationed in Turkey at the time. The Turkish Football Federation founded a national league in 1959, and Fenerbahçe won the first league title and have won multiple league and cup titles since, becoming the most successful side in Turkish history.
Fenerbahçe's most successful season in European football to date was in 2008, when the Turkish side met Chelsea in the quarter finals of the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League. Fenerbahçe won the first leg 2-1, but the away goal proved crucial, with Chelsea progressing after winning the 2-0 in the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
