Sportverein Werder Bremen is a German sports club best known for its association football team. The team play in Bremen, in the northwest German federal state of the same name. The club was founded on 4 February 1899 as Fußballverein Werder by a group of sixteen vocational high school students who had won a prize of sports equipment to set them on their way. They took their name from the seldom used regional German word for "river peninsula", describing the riverside field they first played football on. Werder Bremen have won several Bundesliga titles and German Cups, in addition to the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1992.
Chelsea's only matches to date against Werder Bremen came in the 2006-07 UEFA Champions League group stage, with Chelsea winning their opening match against the Germans 2-0. The German side won the penultimate group game against the Blues 1-0, but it didn't prevent the Londoners from winning the group, with Werder Bremen finishing third behind Barcelona.
