Upon the outbreak of the Second World War all football was suspended including the F. A. Cup
However, both clubs and supporters alike were looking for more football, especially with attendances being restricted.
As a result, as late as April 1940 the "big" clubs joined the "Football League War Cup" and Cup football was to continue, in one guise or other, until 1945.
The Winners, in the first season being West Ham United, who put Chelsea out at the first hurdle, met Blackburn Rovers, the winners of the Northern equivelant.
The League War Cup South was a supplementary competition held in the South of England during World War II, effectively replacing the suspended F. A. Cup.
In the 1940/41 season there was a further Cup competition, The London Cup.
