Associazione Sportiva Roma, commonly referred to as simply Roma, is a professional Italian football club based in Rome. Founded by a merger in 1927, Roma have participated in the top-tier of Italian football for all of their existence but one season in the early 50s. Roma have won Serie A three times, first in 1941-42 then in 1982-83 and again in 2000-01, as well as winning nine Coppa Italia titles and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. Home games are currently played at the Stadio Olimpico, a venue they share with city rivals Lazio.
Chelsea first faced Roma in the 1965-66 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup first round, in an ill-tempered tie. A resounding 4-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, despite a red card for Eddie McCreadie for punching an opponent, meant that the Blues could see out a 0-0 draw in Rome in order to progress, the Chelsea players being pelted with missiles by the home crowd throughout. Carlo Cudicini's father Fabio played for Roma in this tie. The clubs wouldn't meet again in European competition for 43 years, when they were drawn together in the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League group stage. The Blues won the home tie 1-0, but suffered a 3-1 defeat in Rome, ultimately costing the Londoners first place in the group, though they would eventually reach the semi-finals of the competition.
