Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known as simply Benfica or SLB, is a Portuguese multi-sports club based in Lisbon, best known for its association football team. Founded in Lisbon on 28 February 1904, it is one of the "Três Grandes" (Big Three), football clubs in Portugal, along with Futebol Clube do Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal.
Highly successful domestically, with over 30 national Championships, Benfica have also been successful in European competition. They won the 1960-61 and 1961-62 European Cups, and were runners-up in 1962-63, 1964-65, 1967-68, 1987-88 and 1989-1990. They were also runners-up in the 1982-83 UEFA Cup.
Chelsea faced Benfica in a friendly in 1964, but met the Lisbon side for the first time in a competitive match in the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League quarter finals; the Blues winning both legs before going on to win the trophy. The two clubs met again just over a year later, in the 2013 UEFA Europa League Final. Branislav Ivanović secured a 2-1 win for Chelsea with an injury time winner. Benfica reached the final of the same competition a year later, but again lost a major European final, this time to Sevilla on penalties.
