The 1971 European Cup Winners' Cup Final Replay was played 48 hours after the first final, which had resulted in a 1-1 draw following a last-minute equaliser from Real Madrid. Chelsea made one change to their starting line-up; Tommy Baldwin replaced the injured John Hollins, with Derek Smethurst taking Baldwin's place on the bench. Real Madrid made two changes; Argentine centre-forward Miguel Pérez was replaced by Manuel Bueno, while Sebastián Fleitas replaced Francisco Gento.
Two goals in seven first half minutes put Chelsea in charge; Peter Osgood and John Dempsey giving the Blues a 2-0 lead at half-time. Real Madrid came back strongly in the second half, and Sebastián Fleitas pulled a goal back with fifteen minutes remaining, but Chelsea held on to win their first European trophy.
