Chelsea career

Joe hit the ground running as a scholar and was a regular contributor in goal before a mid-season injury ended his campaign. He was exceptionally productive in his second season at Under-18 level, producing at better than a one in two ratio for goals and assists combined, and more promising progress came when he joined the Development Squad in 2021-22. Despite a troubled campaign overall in which relegation was a considerable threat, his numbers and performances were good, and he scored the decisive 87th-minute goal to secure a final day victory against Tottenham Hotspur that ensured survival.

2022-23 began with a loan move to Derby County's Under-23s, where more playing time was projected to be on offer, but an early-season injury ended his campaign, and his time at Chelsea closed in June 2023.
