Enzo Fernández is an Argentinian midfielder who joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023. He is a vice-captain of Chelsea.

Before Chelsea
Enzo Fernández developed at River Plate, debuting professionally in 2019. After a loan spell at Defensa y Justicia in 2020–21—where he gained regular playing time and won the Copa Sudamericana—he returned to River and established himself as one of Argentina’s brightest midfield talents. He made 51 league appearances, scoring 12 goals for River. In July 2022, he transferred to Benfica, where he quickly became a key figure, making 29 appearances, scoring 4 goals, and providing 7 assists in just half a season before earning a big move to the Premier League.
Chelsea career
2022–23 Season
On 31 January 2023, Enzo Fernández joined Chelsea for a British-record transfer fee of £106.8 million, signing an eight-and-a-half-year contract. He made his debut just days later in a 0–0 draw against Fulham. Despite joining mid-season and Chelsea struggling under managers Graham Potter and later Frank Lampard, Fernández quickly established himself as a regular starter. He brought composure and structure to a chaotic midfield, even though Chelsea’s overall performances were inconsistent. He made 22 appearances across all competitions during the second half of the season but did not score or assist. Chelsea finished a disappointing 12th in the Premier League and missed out on European qualification.
2023–24 Season
In his first full season at Stamford Bridge, Fernández played a much more prominent and influential role under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. He partnered in midfield with Moisés Caicedo and Conor Gallagher, showcasing his ability to control tempo, distribute under pressure, and support attacks. He scored his first Chelsea goal on 30 August 2023, a well-taken long-range effort in an EFL Cup victory over AFC Wimbledon. He played a key role in Chelsea’s cup runs, including scoring twice in the EFL Cup semi-finals to help the team reach the final. Now fully fit, he operated as both a deep-lying playmaker and box-to-box engine, depending on the match. He became more productive in the final third, scoring 6 goals and recording 7 assists in the Premier League alone. He also played a major role in Chelsea’s European campaign in the UEFA Conference League, where he made 15 appearances, scored 3 goals, and assisted 10—his creativity and vision helping Chelsea progress deep into the tournament. Additionally, he featured in Chelsea’s Club World Cup run, making 7 appearances. In total, he made 53 appearances across all competitions during the 2024–25 season, scoring 9 goals and providing 17 assists.

International
Enzo Fernández made his debut for the Argentina national team in September 2022. He rose to global prominence at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he played a key role in Argentina’s title win. He scored a memorable goal against Mexico in the group stage and was named the tournament’s Young Player of the Tournament.
